Panther Island questions, answered
What is Panther Island in Fort Worth?
Panther Island is the nickname for the Central City flood-control project along the Trinity River just north of downtown Fort Worth. The goal is a new bypass channel so the area is better protected from floods. Once the river is rerouted, land near downtown opens up for development.
Is Panther Island the same as the flood-control project?
They are connected but not the same. The flood-control bypass channel is built with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The canals and the new waterfront district are the development side, with their own schedule.
Why has Panther Island taken so long?
Reports point to federal funding, land purchases, environmental cleanup, utility relocation and construction disputes. Officials have said the overall target is 2032, and earlier dates have moved.
What is Vision 2.0?
Vision 2.0 is a March 2024 framework from HR&A Advisors with Lake | Flato for a mixed-use waterfront district on about 190 developable acres, with homes, offices, shops, parks, canals and bike routes. It is not a final master plan.
Is Panther Island Update an official government site?
No. This site is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any government agency or project. Each fact links to its source where possible.
Can I license drone footage of Panther Island?
Yes. David Pannell’s 4K drone clips of Fort Worth and the Trinity River are licensed through Pond5, and the link is at the top of every page.
